Billionaire philanthropist George Soros is the chairman of the Open Society Foundations, a network of organizations dedicated to supporting education, public health and a free press throughout the world. Electronic missives from these network agencies were among the most recent emails illegally obtained and released by Wikileaks.
Soros’ support of progressive causes such as prison reform, transgender rights, harm reduction and the legalization of recreational marijuana are no secret and have earned him the ire of right-wing political conservatives throughout the United States. In particular, Soros’ funding of human rights groups in Israel and Palestine has led to what can only be described as a wholesale demonization of his character by demagogues on the right. These demagogues, however, cannot make up their minds whether George Soros is acting against the interests of Israel, the Jewish state, or whether he’s part of a vast labyrinthine Jewish George Soros conspiracy that’s determined to take over the world.

Lies and Innuendoes
The attacks on George Soros emails are the latest round of lies and innuendoes that have targeted this prominent businessman. Soros was born in Budapest in 1930, and thus, he had the opportunity to witness two totalitarian regimes at an early age: Nazi domination and Communist dictatorship. His family was able to elude the concentration camps because his well-connected father disguised the family’s Jewish origins. After the War, Soros immigrated to the U.K. and attended the London School of Economics. Following his graduation, Soros immigrated to the United States and began working on Wall Street where he accumulated a fortune.
Glenn Beck’s Attacks
The conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck seems to bear a particularly strong malice toward Mr. Soros, which dates back long before the George Soros emails. In 2010, Beck produced a television show called “The World According to Soros” in which he characterized Soros as an evil “minence grise” whose Machiavellian manipulations are designed to bring about the fall of the United States and the rise of a New World Order. In portraying Soros this way, Beck seemed to be taking his cues from one of the most notorious pieces of anti-Semitic writing ever composed, “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.”
Beck can’t seem to make up his mind, though, whether George Soros is intent upon subverting the world to a secret Jewish agenda or whether Soros is a Jew who hates other Jews. On Beck’s syndicated radio show, he accused Soros of having sent other Jews to the death camps at the height of World War II despite the fact that Soros was a boy of 13 at the time.
The conservative press’s reaction to the George Soros Wikileaks demonstrates that the far right still has the financier in their gun-sights. It’s inconceivable to them that a man might want to accumulate a fortune so that he could use the power that comes from that fortune for the betterment of mankind. The George Soros Wikileaks show that there is no George Soros conspiracy; there is only one man who believes it’s his responsibility to try and make a positive difference.
